EUDI Wallet business models in 2026: is the elephant still in the room?

The 2025 article, “The elephant in the European Digital Identity Wallet room: how can service providers get paid?”, raised a crucial question about the EUDI Wallet business model: how will commercial actors in the ecosystem get paid? Without payment, commercial actors won't provide services, or they must rely on government funding, which might not be the ideal situation. This post revisits the issue, exploring what has changed and what has not since the 2025 article was published. The observation is that the elephant is still there but actors try to circumvent it by finding alternative ways of getting paid that can work at least for the short term.

Europe is entering a new phase of digital identity. The EU Digital Identity Wallet, or  EUDI Wallet, will give citizens, residents, and businesses a secure way to prove who they are, share verified information, access services, and sign documents across borders. The European Commission says every Member State will need to provide at least one EUDI Wallet, built to common standards and specifications, so it can work across the EU.

The EUDI wallet is here: Navigating the new era of digital onboarding

For every 100 prospects that start your digital onboarding, how many actually finish? That drop-off rate is more than a vanity metric; it’s a direct hit to your bottom line. For years, the financial industry has worked to reduce this friction, balancing security, compliance, and user experience. Now, a transformative new element is entering the landscape: the EU Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet. But this isn't a silver bullet that replaces everything. Instead, it marks the next phase in a 5-10 year transformation story, arriving to coexist with, and in some cases complement, established electronic IDs (eIDs) and identity verification (eIDV) methods. For fintechs and financial institutions, this means the market is about to get more complex, making a clear strategy more critical than ever.
