The Future of Digital Identity: The Transition from iDIN to itsme® in the Netherlands

The world of digital identity is constantly evolving. In a strategic move to create a unified and stronger European digital identity, itsme® announced the acquisition of the Dutch identification service iDIN late last year. As your partner in digital identity, Signicat is here to guide you through every phase of this transition. On this page, you will find all the information you need about the transition plan, the impact on your integration, and the future of authentication in the Netherlands with itsme®.

What Does This Transition Mean?
iDIN, a trusted Dutch standard for online identification, will join forces with itsme®, the leading eID from Belgium, which is already part of the Signicat portfolio. The goal? To establish a more robust, secure, and European-recognized digital identity for all your customers.

Starting June 1, 2026, your customers that download the itsme ® app will be able to log in, identify, sign digitally via itsme® in addition to iDIN. On December 31, 2027, iDIN will cease to exist as a standalone service, and its functionality will be fully replaced by itsme®, retaining the familiar user experience but offering significantly more possibilities.

The Transition Plan: A Clear Timeline

The transition from iDIN to itsme® will be carried out in phases to ensure a smooth experience for you and your end-users.

  • No change.
iDIN continues to operate as the trusted, standalone solution.

  • itsme® as an additional option.
itsme® appeared as a new 'issuer' in the iDIN selection screen. Your customers can choose how they want to log in, with iDIN or after registering, the itsme® app. The planning and whether you allow them to use itsme® at your website or app is up to you.

  • Migration begins.
Period for full migration to itsme® as a standalone solution. Both options will be temporarily available side-by-side. It is possible and advised to start the migration before this date

  • iDIN is discontinued.
The iDIN service will cease to exist. itsme® becomes the new standard.

You will be informed in a timely manner about every step in the process.

Impact on Your Integration: What You Need to Do for Phase 2
The action required from you before the start of Phase 2 (June 1, 2026) depends on your current iDIN integration through Signicat.

Scenario 1: You use the default Signicat issuer selection screen
If your users are redirected to the Signicat-hosted page to select their bank, you are not required to take any action. We will ensure that itsme® is displayed correctly and that the iDIN logo is replaced with the new, combined iDIN and itsme® logo. iDIN will continue to function as usual. When a user now logs in with itsme® through iDIN by selecting the itsme-bank from the bank issuer list, you as a service provider will receive a response with the same attributes as you are used to with the other banks.

Scenario 2: You manage the issuer selection screen in your own custom interface
If you manage and display the list of bank issuers within your own application, you are required to take action.

  1. Add itsme® as a new 'issuer' to your selection list. You can find the technical details for this in our iDIN documentation
  2. Replace the iDIN logo with the new, combined logo that will be made available through the official channels.

For the most up-to-date information on these technical changes, please consult the official transition website.
