Neue Personalausweis

The “neuer Personalausweis” or nPA, is the electronic identity function of the German national identity card.

The eID function is enabled through an RFID chip embedded in the ID card and stores personal identifiable data of the holder in a secure manner.

The eID function can be used for online identification and authentication. A card reader is required to read the chip. This can be an NFC enabled smartphone or a USB card reader connected to a desktop.

Signicat is a certified Identity Service Provider, and is certified to read and share the information in the identity card.

In order to use nPA, the user must install the AusweisApp on their smartphone, tablet or desktop device.
