Bankaktiebolaget Nordiska (publ) is a Swedish bank specialising in partner-driven credit solutions across Europe. Chosen as the lender behind a new premium credit card for customers of a leading European luxury automotive brand, Nordiska needed a compliant, fast, and scalable digital onboarding journey for the German market.

With Signicat’s digital identity solutions, Nordiska now onboards German credit card customers fully online. The setup meets local regulatory expectations while delivering a premium user experience and creates a blueprint for future European rollouts.

Challenges: A complex cross-border launch

Launching a credit card in a new country is rarely just a technical integration. For Nordiska, the project involved several cross-border challenges.

Entering a strictly regulated market from abroad

As a Swedish bank, Nordiska needed to serve German end customers while aligning with local expectations around KYC, AML, and regulatory supervision. The onboarding process had to feel native for German users while also fitting Nordiska’s existing risk and compliance framework.

Delivering a premium experience within the brand’s own channels

The co-branded card is part of a broader mobility and lifestyle offering from a well-known European automotive brand. New customers apply through the brand’s own digital channels, meaning that identity checks needed to be fully embedded in the journey. Any slow or manual steps would feel out of place for a high-end customer base.

Coordinating multiple partners in one journey

The card is delivered through a card-as-a-service model, with different partners responsible for issuing, payment processing, and credit. Nordiska needed an identity partner that could integrate seamlessly into this ecosystem and handle identity proofing and authentication reliably in the background.

Building a repeatable blueprint for Europe

From day one, the ambition was not only to go live in Germany, but to create a setup that could support rollouts to additional European markets without redesigning the entire onboarding process each time.

Solution: Building the digital identity backbone

Nordiska chose Signicat as its digital identity partner to power the German onboarding journey and establish a scalable, cross-border identity layer.

With Signicat, Nordiska can:

Embed identity checks in the brand’s existing digital journey

Applicants start and complete the credit card application within the automotive brand’s own app and digital channels. Signicat’s identity services are integrated directly into this flow, enabling secure identity verification and strong customer authentication without forcing users out of the experience.

Meet local German requirements through one platform

Signicat provides the building blocks that support Nordiska in meeting local KYC and AML requirements in Germany, while remaining aligned with EU regulations. The same platform can later be configured for additional markets, reducing the need for separate point integrations.

Support a partner-based, cross-border model

In a setup where different partners manage issuance, payments, and credit, Signicat acts as the trusted identity layer. Identity data, risk checks, and authentication are handled in a controlled and secure way, allowing each partner to focus on its role in the value chain.

Optimise onboarding for conversion with automated checks

Together, Nordiska and Signicat have designed an onboarding process that removes unnecessary friction while maintaining robust risk controls. Automated checks shorten the time from application to decision, helping more eligible applicants complete the journey in one flow.

Result: From first launch to a European blueprint

The collaboration between Nordiska and Signicat has resulted in a successful cross-border launch and a reusable model for future initiatives. Nordiska is now live with a co-branded credit card for German customers, supported by a digital-first onboarding flow that runs natively within the brand’s own channels and feels like a natural part of the customer journey.

The identity process operates seamlessly in the background, allowing applicants to move from initial interest to an approved card in minimal time. Nordiska reports strong conversion rates on the new journey compared to more traditional manual processes, while maintaining the level of control required in a highly regulated market.

By building on Signicat’s digital identity capabilities, Nordiska now has a cross-border identity framework that can be adapted as the credit card program expands to additional European markets, without rebuilding the onboarding stack from scratch. The project demonstrates how a Swedish bank or fintech can enter a complex market such as Germany with a compliant, digital-first onboarding process by using a single identity layer to manage local requirements and partner structures.
