Challenge

With digitisation being in the spotlight and more services outsourced, the Municipality of De Fryske Marren faced a challenge – the number of DigiD connections they managed had doubled within a few years. This growth brought rising audit and maintenance costs, overwhelming the municipality.

Managing multiple DigiD connections had become inefficient for the Municipality. The growing number of audits and the associated costs strained resources and introduced operational complexity. To stay ahead, they needed a more well-organised, scalable, and futuristic approach to handling identity and authentication requirements across multiple applications.

Solution

De Fryske Marren chose Signicat’s Identity Broker solution and here’s why:

  • Instead of handling multiple DigiD connections, Signicat’s Identity Broker offered the ability the reuse of a single DigiD connection across various applications, allowing everyone to work more efficiently.
  • By consolidating DigiD related tasks, the municipality transitioned from multiple small audits to one more extensive audit and accountability report, significantly reducing administrative work.
  • De Fryske Marren is now prepared for legislative changes. Should new electronic IDs (eIDs) become mandatory, they can be easily incorporated into the current setup via the same integration route.

Result

The municipality uses the Signicat Identity Broker to smoothly connect DigiD and eHerkenning (a trusted form of authentication used in the Netherlands) to their customer portal, called “Mijn Omgeving,” and various e-forms on their corporate website. This guarantees their residents will be able to access services securely and conveniently using the identity method of their choice. The full implementation of Signicat’s Identity Broker across all e-services is already scheduled for a later phase, ensuring an even more future-proof solution.

Meanwhile, the shift to Signicat’s Identity Broker has already delivered great results for De Fryske Marren:

  • Firstly, by unifying all eIDs under a single connection, they have laid the foundation for significant time savings and reduced workload pressure.
  • Secondly, simpler management process helps contain administrative and maintenance costs as their digital ecosystem continues to grow steadily.
  • Finally, the migration of e-forms is a crucial step in their journey. Once completed, the municipality plans to extend the Identity Broker integration to various e-services, further streamlining their authentication processes.
