Pushing AI and ML boundaries while shattering glass ceilings

Hilde Asklund is all about making an impact. From her childhood days programming on a Commodore 64 in her hometown of Trondheim, Norway, to being VP Technology and leading the Data & Analytics tribe at Signicat, Hilde’s career has been driven by a deep curiosity, a passion for innovation, and a commitment to creating meaningful change.

"I wanted to work in a cool and dynamic environment with the latest technology, and Signicat seemed like the perfect fit."

From Commodore 64 to pushing AI boundaries at Signicat

"I first started programming on a Commodore 64 as a kid," Hilde recalls. "It sparked something in me—seeing what I could create just by using my computer." That spark stayed with her, propelling her to pursue Informatics at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).

After university, Hilde began her professional career at what is now TietoEvry, where she contributed to significant digitalisation initiatives, including one of Norway’s biggest tech milestones—the launch of the first Internet bank in the country. "It was hectic but incredibly rewarding. The project marked a massive leap for the financial industry," she says.

Her passion for innovation, coupled with a desire to work in a dynamic and forward-thinking environment, eventually brought her to Signicat, where she continues to push boundaries within the fields of AI and machine learning. In Hilde's own words, "I wanted to work in a cool and dynamic environment with the latest technology, and Signicat seemed like the perfect fit."

"Being a mother to two girls is a constant reminder of how important it is to break barriers and pave pathways for the next generation."

Empowering women within and beyond the tech world

Hilde is not only a leader in technology but also a dedicated role model, especially for younger women and her two teenage daughters. "Being a mother to two girls is a constant reminder of how important it is to break barriers and pave pathways for the next generation," she says. Hilde is passionate about showing them—not just through words, but actions—that women can succeed and perform as well as their male colleagues.

For Hilde, working in a male-dominated industry isn’t just a challenge; it’s an opportunity. "Women bring a broader perspective to business decisions," she explains. "That diversity can be a huge advantage when tackling complex problems or finding innovative solutions." She strives to model this belief for her daughters and their friends, proving that success is not about gender but passion, persistence, and skill.

Beyond her home, Hilde also extends her guidance to female colleagues, sharing advice and experiences to inspire and empower them. "I enjoy helping others see their potential and encouraging them to chase their goals," she adds. She believes these conversations are critical to fostering an inclusive environment where diverse voices are not only heard but valued.

The perfect blend of technology, strategy, and making an impact

Hilde’s current role at Signicat allows her to blend her technical expertise with strategic leadership. "I love the autonomy I have in my role, and the opportunity to make an impact every day," she shares. Whether it’s finding innovative ways to use AI or aligning her team with the company’s overall vision, Hilde thrives on tackling challenges with determination.

A self-professed advocate for collaboration and transparency, she believes that "a lot can be solved through active communication, involvement, and a transparent leadership style." Her leadership philosophy extends beyond the workplace, embodying her preference for diverse perspectives and creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels empowered to contribute.

Hilde finds excitement in seeing her team’s hard work directly benefit customers. "When what we build results in happier customers and a safer digital world, that’s when I know we’ve done something truly meaningful."

Balancing innovation and fundamentals

One of the primary challenges Hilde faces is balancing the need for maintaining existing systems with the push towards innovation. "It’s about finding that sweet spot—a balance between moving the business forward and addressing the immediate needs of today," she says.

And while leading a team comes with administrative tasks, she still takes time out for hands-on work after her core hours. "Even if it’s not coding anymore, focusing on strategy and planning is equally rewarding," Hilde explains.

"I love the autonomy I have in my role, and the opportunity to make an impact every day."

Free time as a must for giving your best at work

For Hilde, maintaining a healthy work-life balance is vital. As a mother of two teenagers, she ensures her work doesn’t overshadow her personal life. "I make it a point to close my laptop when I leave the office and keep it shut until the next day," she notes. When she’s not at work, Hilde enjoys running, lifting weights, painting, and curling up with a good book (she has a special interest in Japanese authors and dreams of visiting Japan in the near future).

Physical activity also helps her stay energised and focused in a fast-paced environment. "I often go for a run in the morning, using the time to clear my head and map out my day. It’s an excellent way to start my day with purpose."

"At Signicat, it’s not about your gender or cultural background; it’s about being accepted and performing at your best as a unique individual."

Hilde’s advice to women in tech: "Chase your passion"

Working in technology—an industry traditionally dominated by men—has never been a challenge for Hilde, but she recognises the importance of diverse and inclusive workplaces. "I believe that diversity, in all forms, leads to more solid decision-making. At Signicat, it’s not about your gender or cultural background; it’s about being accepted and performing at your best as a unique individual," she says.

Her advice for women aspiring to enter tech or leadership roles? "Go for it! If you have the passion and build your skills, there’s no limit to what you can achieve. But make sure it’s something that excites you—something that makes your heart beat a little faster. That’s when you know you’re on the right path."

An "I can, and I will" mindset

"I believe in positive self-talk," she says with a smile. "If there’s something I’m determined to do, I tell myself, ‘You can do it.’ And most of the time, I really can. It’s greatly about mindset and putting in the effort."
