EUDI Wallets: What Denmark's AltID launch signals for European business strategy
Across Europe, the digital identity landscape is undergoing a monumental shift. Denmark's launch of its new national digital wallet, AltID, on June 3, 2026, marks a pivotal moment in this transition, offering a clear signal for what lies ahead for businesses across the continent.
For decision-makers, the time to observe from the sidelines is over. The critical questions are no longer if, but how to strategically adapt to a future built on digital wallets. Now is the time to understand the current landscape, the upcoming legal requirements, and how to navigate a new reality that will define the future of digital commerce.
Status in Denmark: AltID is Live, but the journey to EU Certification awaits.
Since June, Danish citizens have been able to use AltID to prove their identity or age. While this is a significant national milestone, it is essential for all businesses to understand what AltID is today—and what it will become tomorrow.
- A National Wallet—Not a European One (Yet): Currently, AltID operates exclusively within a Danish context. For it to be used across EU borders, it must undergo an official European certification process, which is expected to be completed towards the end of 2026.
- A Supplement, Not a Replacement: AltID will co-exist with MitID, Denmark's existing national eID scheme; it will not replace it.
- New Requirements for Businesses: Companies wishing to use AltID for secure customer identification must officially register as a "Relying Party" with the Danish Agency for Digital Government (Digitaliseringsstyrelsen).
This transition brings clear advantages in the form of enhanced security and user control, but it also places new technical and legal demands on a company's infrastructure.
Status in Europe: Legislation and pilot projects pave the way
In parallel with Denmark's national launch, the EU is working at full speed to finalize the common European regulatory framework (known as eIDAS 2.0). The goal is for every citizen to have a personal, certified EU Digital Identity (EUDI) Wallet that provides access to services throughout the EU.
Who must accept the new wallet?
The legislation is clear and precise: The requirement to accept the EUDI Wallet will apply to all public sector services, regulated industries such as banking, finance, health, energy, and telecommunications, as well as Very Large Online Platforms (e.g., social media networks and marketplaces).
Crucially, all affected businesses must be prepared to accept wallets from all 27+ EU member states—even if the company does not operate in those countries. This highlights the need for a centralized and scalable solution.
What about the business sector?
In parallel with the personal wallet, a European Business Wallet has now been officially adopted. It will make it significantly easier for companies to manage their own data, attestations, and mandates across the EU's single market.
